UM12-16: The Economic Well-Being of Rejected Disability Applicants

Abstract
The aim of this research is to improve our understanding of the economic well-being of rejected disability applicants. Previous studies on rejected applicants have tracked them over short time horizons but not had the sample size necessary to decompose rejected applicants by gender, age or health status. This study will explore and document the extent to which these subgroups rely on income from other program sources to maintain their economic well being over the short and long run. This research will improve our ability to understand spillover effects on other social programs that may occur if there are changes in the current disability determination process that result in higher rates of rejection.
