UM10-05: The Effect of Disability and Disability Insurance on Spousal Labor Supply

Researchers

Abstract

Thus research project proposes to improve our understanding of the work disincentive effects of the Social Security Disability Insurance Program (SSDI) on households. Previous studies of the effects of SSDI have generally focused on applicants to the program and have not studied potential spillover effects that a health shock can have on spousal labor supply. This research will fill this gap in our knowledge by providing quantitative estimates of the effect of husbands’ disability, SSDI application, and SSDI award on wives’ labor supply.
