UM15-11: The Effect of the Affordable Care Act on the Labor Supply, Savings, and Social Security of Older Americans

Researchers

Abstract

The goal of this project is to assess the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on the labor supply of Americans ages 50 and older. Our analysis focuses on the three key parts of the Affordable Care Act that are likely to play the largest roles for labor supply. First, the ACA includes a Medicaid expansion. Second, it is likely to affect the share of individuals who are offered employer provided health insurance. Third, through health insurance exchanges, it affects the purchase price, and thus the share of individuals with private, non-group insurance. To assess impacts of these changes, we will extend the structural model of labor supply, savings, and benefit claiming in French and Jones (2011).
