UM12-19: Trends in Longitudinal Statistics for Young Social Security Disability Awardees

Abstract
Building on past work, we will use administrative data on annual cohorts of young Social Security Disability (SSD) awardees — Social Security Disability Insurance (DI) workers and Disabled Adult Children (DAC) — to produce statistics on their characteristics, employment, time in non-payment status following suspension or termination for work, earnings, and mortality for the period between 1996 and 2009. We will (1) examine trends in key outcomes separately for different subgroups of particular interest, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries who eventually earn enough to enter DI, other DI workers, and DAC; (2) produce statistics for 10 successive annual award cohorts (1996 through 2005), following each through 2009; and (3) analyze trends in awardee characteristics, variation across states, and implications for policies targeted towards youth and young adults with disabilities.We will host a Disability Policy Research Forum focused on this research and related longitudinal analyses of SSD and SSI beneficiaries.
