Mariacristina De Nardi is a Senior Scholar in the Opportunity and Inclusive Growth Institute at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneanapolis. Previously, she was a professor at University College London, a senior economist and economic advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor De Nardi received her PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1999. Her research interests include macroeconomics, wealth inequality, saving, Social Security, health shocks and medical expenses, and fertility. In recent work, she has: examined the role of bequests and entrepreneurship in explaining the observed distribution of wealth; analyzed the effects of Social Security reform on the aggregate economy; and studied the saving and medical spending of the very old. Professor De Nardi has also studied the effects of estate taxation and the relationship between Social Security and fertility. Her work has been published in the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Review of Economic Studies.
