Assistant Professor, University of Michigan

Sandeep Vijan, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Associate Director of the Modeling Core of the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center, at the University of Michigan. He was recently awarded a Career Development Award from the Veteran’s Administration for a project titled, “Diabetes Care: Optimizing Quality, Minimizing Risk.” Dr. Vijan’s research is focused on health policy surrounding the care of chronic diseases. His interests particularly lie in understanding economic factors associated with diseases and the cost-effectiveness of interventions to improve outcomes. He also is focused on understanding how variation in-patient risk affects costs and effectiveness of therapies, as better understanding of these factors allow for targeted intervention that improve efficiency. He has applied these techniques to a number of disease processes, although the primary focus of his research has been in type 2 diabetes. In addition, he has ongoing projects evaluating screening and prevention for diseases ranging from colon cancer to diabetic retinopathy, and is interested in better understanding social and biological factors that contribute to racial variation in management and outcomes of chronic diseases.
